We had a lot of fun and an awesome time at our first Lancaster contest which is a city about 2 hours northeast of Los Angeles. After driving long distances, the past few contests, this was a welcome break not to have to drive 8 hours to compete. We finished on top amid 30 teams including top Jack teams from Arizona making this our 9th GC for 2010 and our second bung towards Jack 2011. There were bands, music, street vendors, a go kart race, and lots of spectators in this family event. It was great to hang with Steve and his crew from All Hogs Go To Heaven, Notley Q, All Sauced Up, and our extended BBQ family.
It was great to see many new teams trying their hand at cooking BBQ. I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with most of them and exchanging tips on how to Q. About 8 new teams who showed up for our Slap Yo Daddy Lazyman box presentation class on Saturday morning where we showed how we make our boxes in 20 minutes for less than $4.00 in materials. One of the attendees, Bill of a newly formed team called Bill’s Best BBQ even won 1st in Brisket using what he learned from us. Some of the veteran teams like Rusty Barrel and When Pigs Fly also stopped by to see what was going on and picked up a few tips.
A BIG congrats go out to all the teams who participated. A big thanks goes to Ann Hill and Steve Madule for making this contest happen; Kelly and Kathleen for being KCBS reps; judges, and helpers for contributing to this awesome event. We’d like to thank our terrific Sponsors: Rocks BBQ System for our Stoker temperature control system, T&H Meat and Sausages for our meat products, TheSlabs.com for our rub products, Cajun Bandit for our Weber stainless replacement doors, Smokin Guns for our rubs, Butcher BBQ for our injections, and Snake River Farms for our Wagyu meat products.
